As a sole artist I sketch, design and handcraft
each handbag in my studio. Reclaimed, recycled and vintage fabrics
and leather are selected for their uniqueness, quality and character.
After a thorough cleaning I match the inner lining, outer fabric
and leather together and select a suitable handbag design. The
process of matching fabrics is the start of the individual story
each handbag holds. Through the process of laying out the design,
cutting and sewing with vintage sewing machines, I reflect on
where the materials came from, the era in which they were originally
used and the new life they will see.
Once the handbag body is complete, a recycled leather handle
is cut and attached with grommets by using a mallet and anvil.
All of the leather is treated with a water resistant coating.
Upon completion, each handbag is given a name that holds a hint
to its past or future.
My handbag designs originate from researching vintage forms
as well as minimalist modern shapes. My ideas are first developed
through a series of sketches, and then samples are created out
of natural canvas so that the shape and proportions of each
new design can be evaluated.
Minimal topstitching and hardware are used so that the focus
is on the color and form of each handbag. I want to achieve
designs that have a timeless form with clean lines using sustainable
materials.
