Matthew Patton is a professional ceramic artist
located in Seattle, Washington. He has been a potter since 1981
and has been living in the Seattle area since the mid 60's His
work is primarily decorative with a heavy emphasis on glaze
effects.
Each piece is fired to 2,300 degrees F in an 80 cubic foot gas
reduction kiln. Surface treatment and form blend in his pieces
to the point that he blurs the working distinction between clay
and glaze.
In the past, glazing was almost all that mattered in his pots.
While it still dominates in Matthew's newer efforts, he is now
experimenting with more formal elements. It was always only
incidental that his plates were food friendly.
He only made them to have a surface to glaze, and he thought
people bought them as much to look at, as to eat off. The flat
clay slabs now lack all reference to food serving surfaces,
and he finds a new freedom in leaving those functional associations
out of my work. Is he now a sculptor and no longer "just" a
potter?
Matthew is not totally sure himself, but he knows one thing:
no one will ask if it's dishwasher safe anymore. Nearly all
of Matthew's pottery is food, oven and microwave safe.
Each piece is handmade on the wheel or with slab construction
in porcelain or stoneware.
You'll find Matthew's work is available in many galleries in
Washington state galleries as well as nationally.
