| Nan Emmett
realized her desire to become an artist at an early age. Her first pottery sessions
and use of a clay studio came before the age of 5, thanks to the patience of a
neighboring artist.
At University she focused on a BFA in painting until
a class in ceramics changed her artistic direction forever. It was the sculptural
aspect of clay rather than the functional wheelwork that spoke to her and it was
here that she was first introduced to the Raku technique.
After University,
Nan moved to Austin, TX, as a charter member of the Laguna Gloria Potters Guild,
she continued her focus on Raku firing and began creating her first clay rattle
forms.
Many years later Nan relocated to Eugene, OR. where she helped
establish the Maude Kern's Art center's clay co-op and became a long time member
of the Oregon Potters Association.
In 1988 she opened a private studio
and began producing the current Spirit Rattle design, as well as continuing to
create a line of limited edition clay sculptures and one of a kind artwork.
Having
recently returned to her home state of Texas, Nan continues to create wonderful
clay sculptures and the spirit rattle collection in her Houston, TX studio.
